Securing the future of Baladi bread: how Egyptian public-private partnerships can help deliver tomorrow’s food security

Egypt is the world’s largest importer of grain, with wheat accounting for over 60 percent of imported grains. Wheat is the fundamental part of Egyptian culture and a strong contributor to food security, with a high per capita consumption of cereals. Under the FAO/EBRD Cooperation, FAO has worked together with EBRD to establish a base for more effective and proactive public/private policy dialogue in Egypt’s grain sector.

FAO and EBRD are organizing a conference “Securing the future of Baladi bread: how Egyptian public-private partnerships can help deliver tomorrow’s food security”. The conference will bring together more than 60 participants from Egyptian grain suppliers, public authorities, and international organisations to explore ways to improve the efficiency of grain supplies in Egypt through an increased proactive role of the private sector.

Sessions will focus on grain infrastructure investment trends and needs in Egypt, relevant phytosanitary measures in grain imports and grain market transparency in order to improve Egypt’s food security by increasing import efficiency, leveraging private sector know-how and creating an environment for investment growth.

Conference Location:
Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah
16 Saray El Gezira Street • Cairo, 11518 Egypt
