Red Meat

Red Meat
Regional red meat figures in the MedAgri region for 2012:
  • The MedAgri region produced about 1.3 million tonnes of red meat
  • Egypt was the largest producer in the MedAgri region with about 797 thousand tons (61% of total regional production)
  • The MedAgri region produced 78% of what it consumed
  • The MedAgri region imported about 390 thousand tonnes of red meat
  • Egypt was the largest importer in the MedAgri region with about 247 thousand tonnes (64% of total regional imports)
  • Domestic consumption in the MedAgri region was about 1.7 million tonnes
  • Egypt had the highest domestic consumption in the MedAgri region with about 1 million tonnes (62% of total regional domestic consumption)
  • Per capita consumption in the MedAgri region was about 13kg/yr

Meat contains large amounts of minerals, such as zinc, iron and phosphorus, as well as B-vitamins, that are integral to a healthy diet. Pig meat and then beef are most important red meats consumed and, in most livestock economics, livestock includes bovine, ovine and pigs. The United States is the largest beef and veal producer, accounting for 17% of global production (about 12 million tons in 2011), followed by Brazil, accounting for 11% (about 9 million tons in 2011). World sheep and goat meat production is dominated by China, which accounts for 29% of total production.

The MedAgri region includes the centers of domestication of several major livestock species, such as cattle, sheep, and goats and thus its breeds are more likely than others to have valuable and unique genetic diversity due to the region’s various climate and production environments. However, cattle productivity in the region remains low. In the MedAgri region, domestic consumption of bovine meat has increased from about 875 thousand tons in 2003 to about 1.3 million tons in 2012. Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia are mostly self-sufficient in meeting consumer demand for red meat, whereas in Jordan production provides only a small fraction of the industries needs and their red meat is mostly imported.
