  • The MedAgri region produced 45% of what it consumed
  • The MedAgri region imported about 16.8 million tonnes

Wheat is the most importance source of protein and energy than any other food crop and remains the most affordable source of protein in most countries. Grown in most regions of the world, it is also one of the most important grains crops traded internationally. In addition to its food use, wheat is also used as a compound in feed and starch production and in ethanol production. The flour milling industry is by far the main consumer of wheat as it is one of the key cereals use for bread, pasta and other food products? production. Internationally, wheat grain is a more widely traded product than wheat flour due to lower import tariffs on wheat grain than wheat flour and related logistical and quality issues, such as shorter shelf life of flour as compared with wheat grain.

The MedAgri region?s wheat consumption has increased from about 21 million tons in 2002 to about 31 million tons in 2012, with an average regional per capita consumption of about 231.6kg/yr ? one of the highest in the world. Here, wheat is a primary food staple and in 2012 the region produced about 14.4 million tons, of which Egypt was the largest producer, producing about 8.7 million tons (61% of the region's total wheat supply). However, the region produces less than 50% of the wheat it requires and so relies heavily upon imported wheat to meet domestic food demand. In 2012, 16.8 million tons of wheat were imported to the MedAgri region (whilst only 14.4 million tons were produced). Egypt is the world?s largest importer of wheat, importing 10 million tons in 2012.
