Agricultural land constitutes a part of any country?s territory and denotes the land base upon which agriculture is practiced, for both crops and for livestock. The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) divides agricultural land into 3 components:
In the MedAgri context, depletion and degradation of land pose a serious challenge to producing enough food and other agricultural products to sustain livelihoods. The region has tried to increase its agricultural area through restoration of desert land.
- Arable land - land under annual crops
- Permanent crops - such as vineyards or orchards
- Permanent pastures - areas for natural grasses and grazing of livestock
restoration is the process of rehabilitating a site that has sustained
environmental degradation back to its natural state, safe for humans, wildlife and plant communities. Desert areas are being converted to agricultural land and rural settlements, done primarily through adding water i.e. by extending water canals from existing agricultural land into the desert and working the soil, ploughing in manure to enhance its fertility.
